Alien Film ORWO NC400 35mm Film
Orwo NC400 is a color negative 35mm film with ISO 400 sensitivity, manufactured by ORWO (Original Wolfen), a company with a long and complex history rooted in the early days of analog photography and cinema.
NC400 is one of the first new color negative films released by ORWO since the company was revived in the 21st century. While ORWO is better known for its black and white motion picture film, NC400 represents an effort to bring back color film production to Wolfen using heritage motion picture technology. The emulsion is based on former AGFA motion picture film formulas, giving it a unique look that differs from contemporary color films like Kodak Portra or Fujifilm Superia.
The film tends to produce cool tones, moderate contrast, and a fine but noticeable grain structure. Its color palette leans toward subdued saturation, with greens and blues often taking on a cooler cast. These characteristics make it particularly suited to documentary, street, and artistic photography where a less polished, more atmospheric aesthetic is desired.
NC400 is coated and cut in Germany, and as of its release, is only available in 35mm format. It is developed using the standard C-41 color process, making it compatible with all photo labs using standard development. Alternatively it can be developed in the cine-native ECN-2 process.
ORWO NC400 is a distinctive film that appeals to photographers looking for a different color aesthetic typically found in the mainstream options.
